Driefontein Gold Mine – Carltonville

The Driefontein Gold Mine channel was fraught with problems, that included leaking joints; sub-soil movement, roof penetration through the concrete structure. This resulted in the mine loosing copious amounts of water through the concrete channel, which was costly coupled with the fact that the volume of leaking water was causing ‘sink holes’ and soil erosion in the surrounding areas. This was obviously a health and safety issue that could not be tolerated by the mine.
Solution:
The solution was to re-direct the water source in order to undertake the required remedial work. The process as follows:
- The entire surface was water blasted, then mechanically ground to remove contaminants.
- All expansion joints were cleaned out and the damaged areas repaired.
- All latent cracks in the concrete structure were repaired using our fast setting MMA Concrete Repair Kits.
- The expansion joint sealant was re-installed and the joint overlapped using our RX – Protadeck System.
- A 1.5mm layer of our RX – Aqualiner was applied to the entire area and due to the rapid curing of the system, the channel was returned to service with immediate effect.
