The History of Levingers…

Being Jewish, Henry and Rose Levinger were asked to choose either Canada or South Africa during the World War 2 to move to as a place of safety. They came from England to South Africa with their two kids Peter and Margaret Levinger. Peter Levinger was born in England on 27/11/1936.

Peter married Adele and had two kids viz. Leigh and Karyn Levinger. Margaret married Allan Becker and had two kids, Ian and Beverly Becker.

When Henry Levinger died, Peter and Margaret took over the business which Henry started in End Street, Doorfontein, Johannesburg. It was purely a shoe repair business. Prior to taking over the business Peter Levinger studied to become a medical doctor. After delivering his first baby he felt this was not what he wanted to do and went on to study pharmacy.

His heart however was still in his dad’s business which was Levingers Expert Shoe Repairs.

Henry Levinger died in 1981, Peter Levinger (the son) then took control over the business 1985 together with his sister Margaret.

In 1991 Margret Becker suffered a stroke forcing her semi- retirement out of the business. In 1995 Peter Levinger suffered a major heart attack forcing an emergency triple bypass. Unfortunately he did not recover and passed on at the Morningside Hospital.

He is most widely remembered for his expertise in shoe repairs and his sense of humour. During his time of running the Levingers Empire, Peter extended the Levingers brand over three branches – Cresta, Balfour Park and Killarney – all of which to this date are still operational.

When Peter died, his daughter Karyn took over the day to day operations of the factory until 1997, along with Ian Becker, Margaret’s son.

Unfortunately, Levingers Expert Shoe Repairs was not their cup of tea hence forcing them to sell it to a reputable business associate, Aki Fardoulis who took over the business from them towards the end of 1997.

Mr Levinger had a mystical side, being a professional magician, a hobby that he passed on to both his daughters, who became the youngest registered magicians in the world, which was recorded in The Guinness Book of Records in 1975.

Peter Levinger was known by all the hospitals in SA, for his Orthopedic work on shoes for both adults and children. He learned that if Orthopedic support was put in children’s shoes at a young enough age, children could learn to walk properly. He was employed by people all over the world to make Orthopedic supports for people who needed them.

He made moulded soles for the likes of Bruce Fordyce and other famous sportsmen to enable their shoes to work with their strengths and negate their inadequacies. These moulds are still in existence.

Aki Fardoulis had the business up until the year 2000 and they sold it on to the Excellerate Group.

Hays Business Consultants owned and operated by Mr Yadhir Mooloo began consulting for Excellerate holdings from August 2011.

Mr Yadhir Mooloo purchases the brand (Levingers Dry Clean & Shoe Clinic) as of October 2012 to current.
